Getting started

What do I need to use Lipi?

One Lipi box per room (a 4-channel relay controller on an ESP32), your home WiFi, and a phone number that can receive WhatsApp. That's it — no cloud subscription, no hub, no bridge.

You'll use the box's own setup hotspot once to give it your home WiFi credentials; after that it's cloud-connected and you control it from any signed-in device.

Where do I sign up?

Open app.lipi.me and enter your phone number. You'll get a one-time code on WhatsApp — type it in and you're signed in. Sessions last 30 days.

Which devices can I control Lipi from?

Every signed-in surface stays in perfect sync over WebSocket:

  • Web PWAapp.lipi.me in any browser; installable.
  • iPhone — native SwiftUI app (coming soon to the App Store).
  • Android — Compose app (coming soon to Play).
  • Mac — Catalyst build of the iOS app.
  • WhatsApp — send a message to the Lipi number as a fallback from anywhere.

Pairing a new box

How do I pair a brand-new Lipi box?

Four steps:

  • Power the box on.
  • On your phone's WiFi list, join the open network named Lipi-XXXX (the four characters after the dash are unique to your box).
  • A captive portal opens. Pick your home WiFi from the list and type its password. Tap Connect — the box switches networks and reaches our cloud within a few seconds.
  • The same portal page then shows an 8-character Pair code like ABCD-1234. In the Lipi app, tap + Add a new Lipi box and type that code. Done.
I don't see a pair code on the portal — why?

The pair code only appears after the box has successfully connected to your home WiFi and reached the Lipi cloud. If you're still seeing the WiFi-picker view, the box hasn't got internet yet.

Double-check you typed the WiFi password correctly, and that your home WiFi is 2.4 GHz (the ESP32 doesn't do 5 GHz).

My pair code says "invalid" — what now?

Pair codes are cleared after a successful claim, so if someone else already claimed the box, the code is gone. Options:

  • If you claimed it on a different account earlier, sign in there and use Remove on the box — that returns it to unclaimed state and a fresh pair code is minted.
  • If you can't access the earlier account, factory-reset the box (hold the reset button for 5 seconds). The box clears its stored state and broadcasts a new pair code on next boot.

Controlling relays

How do I turn a relay on or off?

Tap the orb inside a relay tile. Green = ON, dark = OFF. State syncs across every open surface in real time — if your partner toggles on their phone, your web tab updates instantly.

What do the ALL ON and ALL OFF buttons do?

They toggle every relay on that one box. The button outlines in green when every relay is already on, and red when every relay is off — so the current aggregate state is legible at a glance without counting orbs.

How do I rename a relay or the whole box?

Tap Rename on the box card (owners only). Each relay turns into a text field; type a meaningful name — "Kitchen light", "Bedroom fan", etc. Save commits in one round-trip. Voice commands work better when relays are named naturally.

Voice commands

How does the voice control work?

Tap the green mic in the bottom-right of the app to open the voice overlay. Press and hold anywhere on the overlay (or press Space), speak naturally, release. The orb pulses to your voice in real time. On release, Lipi transcribes, figures out which relays you meant, fires them, and speaks a reply.

Works in Hindi, English, and Hinglish — Lipi mirrors your tone and slang.

What kinds of commands work?

Just say what you want. Examples:

  • "bhai fan chalu kar de"
  • "turn on the kitchen light"
  • "sab band kar"
  • "disco mode chalu kar"
  • "status?" — get the current state of every relay back

If Lipi doesn't understand, it'll say so — rephrase or use a relay name.

Nº 05

WhatsApp control

How do I control Lipi from WhatsApp?

The same phone number you signed up with is automatically allowed to send commands over WhatsApp. Message the Lipi number with a plain-language command — "sab band kar", "kitchen light on" — and the LLM routes it to the right relay. You'll get a reply in the same dialect.

My WhatsApp message isn't doing anything.

Three things to check:

  • Your phone number must match the owner (or a member) of the box.
  • The Lipi box itself must be online. Open the app — if the box's dot is red, WhatsApp can't reach it either.
  • The WhatsApp session on our end could be down. If nothing you send gets a reply, we'll fix it on our side — email below.

Inviting family members

How do I give someone else access?

On the box card, tap Members (owner only). Type their phone number in E.164 format (e.g. +919876543210) and pick which relays they can control — leave blank for full access. Tap Invite.

They'll get a WhatsApp message with a link to sign in. Once they sign in with that number, the box appears on their home screen.

How do I remove a member?

On the Members screen, tap remove next to their name. They lose access instantly — their open app drops the box from the list in real time.

Can I transfer ownership?

Not yet directly. Workaround: Remove box on your side (the box goes back to unclaimed state and a fresh pair code is minted), then have the new owner claim it with that code.

Troubleshooting

My box shows as offline.

Check the box's WiFi. The LED blinks while connecting and stays solid once online. If it never goes solid, either the WiFi network changed, the password changed, or the box is out of range. Hold the reset button for 5 seconds to wipe WiFi creds, then re-run the pairing steps.

I tap a relay but nothing happens.

Usually one of three things:

  • Your WebSocket is disconnected. The dot under "Lipi" in the topbar will say "offline" — reload the page.
  • Your phone doesn't have an internet connection.
  • The box is offline (see above).
How do I factory-reset the box?

Hold the reset button for ~5 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly. The box wipes its WiFi credentials and Lipi pairing state, and reboots into setup mode with a fresh Lipi-XXXX hotspot.

Nº 08

Privacy & data

What do you store on the server?

Just enough to make the product work:

  • Your phone number (your sign-in identity).
  • The devices you own and their relay names.
  • Your active sessions (30-day expiry) and which members you've invited.

We don't record voice clips. Grok STT transcribes per request; the audio isn't persisted on our side. LLM calls happen at request time and aren't stored beyond a short log line.

Can I delete my account?

Not yet self-service — email the address below and we'll delete your user row, sessions, devices, and memberships within 72 hours.

Is Lipi open source?

Yes — MIT-licensed on GitHub. Fork the server, the firmware, the apps, anything.

Still stuck?

Send a note — we read everything and reply within a day.
